Located one block away from Best Western River North is – yes, I'll say it – one of the most famous restaurants in the history of Chicago. I'm talking about Portillo's, of course. You may have had an Italian Beef sandwich, but if you haven't had a Portillo's Italian Beef, you just haven't had an Italian Beef. When thinking about “Chicago experiences” one might think of riding the “L” through the Loop while viewing the skyline. One might think of having a beer in Wrigleyville during a Cubs game. As a rural transplant to Chicago, eating at Portillo's was a rite of passage. It may sound strange to individuals raised in cities, but the hustle bustle of Portillo's feels like a microcosm of the city. The lines can be long, but they move fast because the people know what they want and know people behind them are waiting. I view this as a distinctly city experience – you can see it duplicated on public transportation and most other public spaces. The workers are loud and don't mind making their voice heard. After all, it's a big place with lots of people – you'd better be sure your coworkers hear you. It's fast, it's loud, and it's delicious. Just like the city, your reward for standing in line, raising your voice, and being sure of what you want is simply the best -- the best of the best. For me, nothing beats an Italian Beef, dipped, with sweet peppers. Pair that with their perfect fries and a milkshake, and I'm in heaven. But let's not give Italian Beef all the credit. Chicago hot dogs are served to perfection, as our Polish sausages and burgers, while pasta and greener options are available. Portillo's has branched out and may reside in a city near you. But, for a uniquely Chicago experience, why not walk one block away to Portillo's? If you eat a little more than you should, at least it will be easy to get home.
